Alloy C22 (Hastelloy C-22)

Alloy C22 (Hastelloy® C-22) is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy developed for exceptional resistance to localized corrosion (pitting and crevice corrosion) and excellent performance against stress corrosion cracking in highly aggressive environments. Thanks to its balanced alloying concept, C22 performs well in both oxidizing and reducing media and is frequently selected for mixed-acid environments where many conventional materials show limited reliability.

The alloy’s high chromium content supports strong resistance in oxidizing conditions, while molybdenum and tungsten enhance resistance in reducing acids and provide excellent pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in acid/halide environments. This makes Alloy C22 a preferred choice for chemical processing equipment, pollution control systems and waste treatment installations where corrosion mechanisms can vary within one process.

Alloy C22 is also known as Werkstoff 2.4602 and UNS N06022. Steelinox B.V. supplies this grade in multiple product forms such as round bar, forgings, plates, custom-cut plates and tubes. Certification is available according to EN 10204 / 3.1.

Applications

Alloy C22 is commonly selected for installations where the process environment can vary between oxidizing, reducing and mixed-acid conditions, and where localized corrosion resistance is critical. Typical applications include:

  • Chemical processing equipment: reactors, piping, columns, agitator parts and components exposed to aggressive acids and halide-containing streams.
  • Pollution control systems: scrubbers, absorbers and ducting components where condensates and mixed chemicals can create severe corrosion.
  • Flue gas desulfurization (FGD): parts exposed to acidic condensates and chlorides in wet scrubbing systems.
  • Waste incineration and waste treatment: components exposed to aggressive condensates, chlorides and mixed acid environments.
  • Pulp and paper processing: corrosion-critical parts in chemical recovery and handling of aggressive media.
  • Heat exchangers and pressure components: where resistance to pitting/crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking is required.
  • Alloy C276 (Ni-Cr-Mo alloy for severe corrosion; frequently compared for reducing media)
  • Alloy 625 (Ni-Cr-Mo alloy with strong general corrosion resistance and broad industrial use)

FAQ – Alloy C22

What makes Alloy C22 especially corrosion resistant?

The high chromium, molybdenum and tungsten contents provide outstanding resistance to localized corrosion such as pitting and crevice attack. The alloy also performs well in both oxidizing and reducing acids, including mixed-acid environments. This versatility is one of the main reasons Alloy C22 is used in extremely aggressive chemical service.

Is Alloy C22 suitable for chloride-containing media?

Yes. Alloy C22 offers excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion and is also highly resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking. It is therefore often chosen for seawater, brines and process streams containing chlorides. For critical applications, the full service conditions (temperature, chloride level, oxidizers, flow) should be reviewed.

How does C22 perform in oxidizing and reducing acids?

Alloy C22 is designed to perform well in both oxidizing and reducing acidic environments. Chromium supports resistance in oxidizing conditions, while molybdenum and tungsten enhance performance in reducing acids. This makes the alloy particularly suitable when the process chemistry varies or when mixed acids are present.

Can Alloy C22 be welded?

Yes. Alloy C22 can be welded using appropriate filler materials and qualified procedures. Its composition helps reduce the risk of hot cracking and supports corrosion performance in the weld and heat-affected zone. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required for corrosion resistance, but fabrication procedures should be aligned with the project specification.

Which product forms and sizes are available?

Steelinox B.V. supplies Hastelloy® C22 / Alloy C22 (2.4602 / UNS N06022) in round bar, forgings, plates, custom-cut plates and tubes. Round bar is typically available from 8 mm to 310 mm, with other dimensions available on request.

Do you supply tubes, flanges and fittings?

Yes, tubes and piping-related products can be supplied on request depending on specification. Typical availability includes seamless and welded tubes, as well as flanges and fittings to ASTM/ASME or EN standards. Please specify the required standard, size range and wall thickness (or schedule) when requesting a quote.
